Deep Clean vs Standard Clean: Which Does Your Calgary Home Need?
Which Clean Does Your Home Actually Need?
A lot of people call us and say, "I just need a regular clean." Then we show up and the baseboards have not been touched in eight months, there is grease built up behind the stove, and the bathroom grout is a different colour than it used to be. That is not a standard clean situation. Knowing the difference before you book saves everyone time and means your home actually gets clean.
What a Standard Clean Covers
A standard clean, sometimes called a recurring or maintenance clean, is exactly what it sounds like. It keeps a home that is already in decent shape looking and smelling fresh. Think of it as upkeep, not a reset.
- Vacuuming and mopping floors
- Wiping down kitchen counters and the outside of appliances
- Cleaning sinks, toilets, tubs, and mirrors in bathrooms
- Dusting surfaces that are easy to reach
- Emptying bins and tidying visible areas
If you are booking every two weeks or every month and your home is generally maintained between visits, a standard clean is the right fit. Most of our regular clients in Calgary, Airdrie, and Chestermere fall into this category once we get their home to a good baseline.
What a Deep Clean Covers
A deep clean goes into the places a standard clean skips. It takes more time and more effort, and it is meant to bring a home back to a genuinely clean state, not just a presentable one.
- Inside the oven, fridge, and microwave
- Scrubbing grout lines in the bathroom and kitchen
- Cleaning inside cupboards and drawers
- Wiping down baseboards, door frames, and light switches
- Removing scale and soap scum buildup on fixtures
- Cleaning behind and underneath furniture and appliances where possible
- Window sills, blinds, and ceiling fans
This is the kind of work that makes a real difference in a home that has not had professional cleaning in a while, or one that has been through a lot of use.
How to Tell Which One Your Home Needs Right Now
Here is a simple way to figure it out. Walk through your home and check these spots honestly.
Check the kitchen
Open the oven. Pull the stove out slightly if you can and look at the side panels. Look at the inside of your range hood filter. If there is grease buildup or visible grime in any of these spots, you are looking at deep clean territory. A standard clean will not touch those areas.
Check the bathrooms
Look at the grout between tiles. Look at the base of the toilet, not just the bowl. Check the corners of the shower where mould or mildew can start. If things have a grey or pink tinge that did not used to be there, that needs a deep clean first.
Think about the last professional clean
If it has been six months or longer since someone professionally cleaned your home, or if it has never been professionally cleaned, start with a deep clean. This applies whether you are in a house in Okotoks, a condo downtown Calgary, or a townhouse in Cochrane. The condition matters more than the location, but homes that sit empty or see heavy use tend to need more work regardless.
Consider recent events
Just had a renovation? Moving into a new place? Hosting a lot over the holidays? These situations almost always call for a deep clean. We do a lot of move-in and move-out cleaning for people in the Calgary area, and the number one mistake we see is someone booking a standard clean for a property that clearly needs a deep clean first. The result is a job that looks rushed, because it was not the right service for the condition of the home.
What Drives the Difference in Price
People ask us this all the time. The main factors are the size of the home, how long it has been since the last clean, how many people and pets live there, and what specific add-ons are needed. A deep clean on a small two-bedroom condo that is generally tidy is a very different job than a deep clean on a five-bedroom home in Chestermere that has been vacant for four months. We always ask about your home before we give you a number. Text us the details and we send back an exact quote, no guessing.
The Bottom Line
If your home is already maintained and you are just looking to keep it that way, a standard clean works great. If there is any doubt, start with a deep clean. It gives you a proper baseline and makes every standard clean after that faster and more effective. We have had clients in Airdrie and Cochrane tell us the home felt different after a proper deep clean in a way they had not expected. That is just what happens when the built-up stuff finally gets dealt with.
